19th December 2024
As I write just before Christmas the weather, on the whole, remains relatively mild. I can count on one hand the number of frosts so far and there’s not been any sightings of the Beast from The East, it’s been more the Best from the West.
This as certainly helped with the more tender Autumn veg lasting right through the current month. We still had Broccoli in our boxes up until mid December and there’s still plenty of Chard around. Frost and snow tend to kill these off so we have been enjoying the extended harvest.
All of the root veg, Carrots, Parsnips, Beet, Swede etc. are still plentiful and the lack of floods and frost make getting them from the field easier. Always good not to have to use boats or snow shoes to harvest veg.
Cauli are in good supply and unlike previous years this means a reasonable price. So far. Cabbage of all shades are doing well too.
Kales, as the ‘hard nuts’ of Winter Veg are thriving, even the ‘softer’ Cavolo Nero is still going ‘strong’.
To complete the Brassica picture, Brussel Sprouts are, guess what, thriving.
A lot of the Brassicas do struggle with snow, causing damage as it thaws. We all like a crisp Winter’s day but not too many…
The Winter Squash have pretty much finished by now.
We still have tomatoes from Thanet Earth, such a bonus for this time of year. Add in Salad Leaves from Grow Up in Sandwich and there’s a hint of Spring in mid Winter.
Fruit is now restricted to Apples & Pears from storage.
Looking forward to January there’s not much new on the way. Purple Sprouting Broccoli should be with us soon, thanks again to the mild weather. Thanet Earth also start producing Cucumbers to add to the salad collection.
In the main though it’s Roots & Brassicas all the way. The weather will decide how much variety we get!
