Welcome to the start of the new Mussel Season with the Boathouse Fisheries

Mussel season typically starts in the cooler months, with peak times varying depending on location and the type of mussels.

In the UK, including Shetland, mussel season generally begins in autumn and continues through winter into early spring. This timing is ideal because mussels are in their best condition during colder months when they have firm, plump flesh and a rich flavour.

Why Shetland Mussels are the Best

Shetland, an archipelago in Scotland, is renowned for producing some of the finest mussels in the world. Several factors contribute to the exceptional quality of Shetland mussels:

  1. Pristine Waters: Shetland’s remote location in the North Atlantic provides mussels with some of the cleanest and most nutrient-rich waters. The strong tides and cold temperatures create an ideal environment for mussels to thrive.
  2. Sustainability: Mussel farming in Shetland is highly sustainable. Mussels are grown on ropes suspended in the water, a method that does not harm the seabed or marine environment. This method also allows mussels to filter feed naturally, enhancing their flavor and quality.
  3. Rich Nutrients: The nutrient-rich waters of Shetland contribute to the mussels' fast growth and plump, juicy flesh. The mussels have a slightly sweet, briny taste, making them particularly desirable.
  4. High Standards: Mussel farming in Shetland follows strict quality control and environmental standards, ensuring that the mussels are free from contaminants and of the highest quality. They are often harvested to order, ensuring freshness when they reach the market.
  5. Unique Flavor Profile: Due to the cold waters and nutrient availability, Shetland mussels have a unique flavor that is both sweet and slightly salty, with a firm texture that is not found in mussels from warmer climates.
