Who’d have thought the words ‘local’ and ‘Tuna’ would appear in the same sentence!
In 1929 Tuna departed our waters, there are no theories as to why this might have been other than the food source had moved on. Approximately 6 years ago they started to been seen around the Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall areas.
In 2019 licenses were issued to a small number of fisherman to catch, tag and track them to observe their numbers, monitoring continued until last year when 10 fishermen were issued a license to commercially catch for sale, the season was very short and ran from September to December.
We are pleased to let you know, that the authorities are happy that this species is thriving in our waters and have not only given an allowance of an additional 5 licenses but also increased the quota.
We anticipate both Local Blue fin and Local Yellow fin Tuna to be available from late July/ Early August.
These fish have a deeper colour and more oily appearance which add to its deliciously rich flavour.
This will be made available to our wholesale customers who I’m sure will be delighted to have ‘Local’ Tuna on their Summer menu, but also to our retail customers too for their summer BBQ’s.
