Whitstable is world famous for its oysters and has been for centuries.
Whitstable Oysters currently have PGI [Protected Geographical Indication] status which ensures their provenance and quality.
Whtstable Oysters are bivalve molluscs of the species Ostrea edulis (Native oyster) and Crassostrea gigas (Pacific rock oyster). The Whitstable oyster beds are directly offshore from the town, and are famous for the quality of the oysters that they produce. The Company supplies both wild Whitstable Natives and the cultivated Pacific rock oysters to the public, the Trade and, of course, their own celebrated restaurants.
Modern aquaculture of oysters is one of the most sustainable methods of producing protein in the world. Oysters naturally feed on algae in the water whilst improving water quality, improving biodiversity and acting as a carbon store to mitigate climate change.
Oysters are a good source of minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium and vitamins such as B12 and D. They are one of the only truly sustainable sources of marine based fatty acids such as the Omega 3 Fatty acids DHA and EPA which have been shown to be so important in brain development and cardiovascular health.
