The River Medway meets together with the River Len in the gardens of the Archbishop Palace in the centre of Maidstone.
The River Len starts at Lenham (hence the name!) and journeys to Maidstone via Leeds Castle and Mote Park.
Med–way was so named as ‘med’ was the Saxon name for ‘middle’ as the river ran through the middle of Kent. It’s 70 miles long. All rivers start out being completely freshwater, as does the Medway until you pass through Allington Lock in Maidstone. Here the river changes to tidal waters for the Rochester end of the journey where it mixes with salty the sea water picked up with the changing tides coming in and out.
You can learn heaps more about Maidstone, at the same time as having fun with the Maidstone Quiz Trail.
