About the Instructor

John Easton joined East Malling Research Station in 1964, following seven years in commercial fruit growing and was within the group assisting scientists in growing and maintaining trials, whilst keeping up-to-date with new developments. After two years at Hadlow College he returned to East Malling as Experiments Officer, subsequently transferring to the nursery as Technical Co-ordinator. John became the Nursery manager in 1978 and then added the post of Glasshouse manager in 1978. He retired in 2000 but continues to train staff in horticultural skills and advises on pruning and related issues.

What Others Say…

“Great class, very informative and we learnt a lot. John was clear and very engaging. The practical pruning sessions in the orchard really helped to reinforce just how much thought needs to go into pruning – its not just about aesthetics. I would definitely recommend this course. Many thanks for making courses like these available.”

“The course was very informative and also extremely entertaining. John is obviously an expert, and it was a privilege to join his course. He also went out of his way to make himself available for our personal questions and issues. It was a marvellous day” – Noel Ensoll

“An excellent day with a mixture of theory and outdoor practice. John accommodated the varying needs and expertise of the group and dealt patiently and knowledgeably with questions, including those of a novice like me. It was enlightening and encouraging to find you could be bolder with pruning than you might at first have thought! Plenty of coffee and tea; lunch was finger buffet style but perfectly adequate. Staff at the centre were welcoming and friendly. Very good value for money”

“The right balance of theory and practical. Very approachable with all my questions. He got the class to gel immediately with his relaxed and friendly approach. He is an excellent instructor. I learnt heaps! Thank you.” – Karen Kartriebe
